The politics of tech – why it matters

Lots of news this year on the politics of tech – Trump banning/restricting Chinese tech like Huawei, Tiktok and now India doing same, more extensively.
China is crying foul.
Do you agree with what USA and India are doing? Is China citing WTO fair?
I’m mixed. On one hand, am pro-competition, like most of audience. Yet, for two reasons, I think the reasons for politicians stepping in isn’t so black and white.
First, China did it first. For decades and still now, top tech firms whether Google or Facebook were just NOT allowed in China or severely restricted. This gave time/space for Chinese firms like Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, JD, etc to develop into the powerhouse they are today.
Second, tech is not just another industry. It is pervasive and the apps know more about us than ourselves. The data if not protected can and is likely being used for nefarious reasons, whether political or otherwise. So it is deeply strategic to any society – government does have a role to protect its citizens.
I can understand why India wants to protect its nascent tech industry which is now US/China company dominated.
What are your thoughts, what is the right balance of market vs government?
